Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
The renewable heat incentive (RHI) is a UK government sponsored scheme to encourage the transfer of energy generation from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as biomass. The RHI is designed to reduce the capital barriers to using renewable energy boilers and to encourage business to reduce its dependence on oil and gas so that the UK may move closer to the targets set in the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change. The scheme is available to commercial users of energy and is based on the use of heat meters to measure generated units of energy. The scheme is administered by Ofgem and has been open since 28.11.11 in mainland Britain but is due to be rolled out in Northern Ireland in 2012.
